Fish, Fish, Jump Into My Dish
The SS Maheno has been stranded on 75 Mile Beach at Fraser Island ever since she was wrecked during a cyclone on 7 July 1935. Over the years she has gradually deteriorated and all that is left now is the rusted hull, which is surrounded by water at high tide.
According to legend, there is a giant fish living in the waters around the wreck. Known as the Maheno monster, he has managed to evade capture for many years. I decided to go down to the Maheno to find out if the stories were true. Beavers are not fish eaters, so I wasn’t planning on catching the monster for my dinner. I just wanted to see him.
There were plenty of fishermen on the beach but this osprey was the only one catching anything.
I couldn’t resist the call of the ocean so I got out my fishing rod and baited the hook. It didn’t take long before I had a catch!
How exciting. My fish was nearly as big as me but it wasn’t the monster and I didn’t even get a glimpse of him.
The legend lives on…
