When You’re Smiling
Dear Friends,
Meet The Goondiwindi Grey – Gunsynd, one of Australia’s most popular racehorses and a true legend.
He was bought for just $1300 in 1969 by a syndicate from Goondiwindi, pronounced Gundiwindi, and his name was an abbreviation of that – Goondiwindi Syndicate! After such an inconspicuous start he went on to win 29 races and $289 455 in prize money over the next four years. He was the only horse to win Australia’s four Group 1 mile races in the one season and he was third in the 1972 Melbourne Cup. In 1973 Gunsynd was named Racehorse of the year and the song The Goondiwindi Grey was recorded by Tex Morton. In 2004 he was the only animal on Queensland’s top 150 Icons list, and in 2005 he was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. The Gunsynd Museum was opened in Goondiwindi in 2007 and displays his trophies, photographs and racing memorabilia.
What an amazing life. No wonder Gunsynd is smiling!
