Nothing Compares to Ewe!

Dear Friends,

I was chatting to a friend this week and she recommended a wonderful place to visit to try a delicacy with a difference.

The Grandvewe Farm Cheesery at Birchs Bay on the east coast of Tasmania is the home of Tasmanian Sheep Cheese and other products made from organic sheep milk.

The farm is aptly named as the view from the deck is certainly grand. Imagine coming to work every day to an outlook over the lush green paddocks, across the D’Entrecasteaux Passage to Bruny Island in the distance. Luckily I was there on a warm, sunny day but the view would be beautiful no matter what the weather.

One of those who works at Grandvewe is Ryan – hot chocolate maker extraordinaire. He gave me a private barista lesson and shared his secrets for the perfect sheep milk beverage.

Of course he has other duties as well and we tasted some of the cheeses that are made on the farm. My favourite was the Spanish Delight – rich, soft and smoky.

The tasting didn’t stop there.

The smoked mutton sausage was sensational,

the pinot paste was perfect

and the sheep milk ice cream was incredible.

You know how much I love good food – I could have stayed all day, sampling these gourmet delights.

I wasn’t the only one to be impressed by the quality of the Grandvewe cheeses.  This year, their Sapphire Blue Cheese was awarded Champion Cheese at the Sydney Royal Cheese and Dairy Produce show and was one of six finalists for the 2012 RAS President’s Medal. How exciting!

I hope the visitors keep flocking to the Cheesery!
